A patchwork quilt in progress

I showed you the patchwork fabric in my last post. This is all the fabrics sewn together. I was going to do something fancy in the white squares and then decided to do some free motion embroidery.....from then it all went wrong!I tried a number of times to get the machine to work but it wouldn't catch properly. So thought no 2,3 and 4 was I could do squiggles in a nice red or green cotton thread by hand....didn't work, now I am using quilters white cotton and doing it all by hand in straight lines.

The wadding was too thick, which I didn't realise until I had sprayed it with 505 so carefully took it all apart and then teased some of the wadding away so it was a bit thinner. (that was a job)HH said it would have looked better with a darker green sashing!  Anyways enough of the doom and gloom, I have now hand quilted the first block and this is the way it's staying. So far I'm pretty pleased with that. The colours are a lot brighter in real life.

This quilt is going to take some time, so can I go off and do other projects as well, think I've earned it?!!

So Sunny if you are reading this, now you know why I will never be a quilt maker, as well as all the other problems, some of the patches dont line up and I'm definately not going to show you a close up :0P haha

  1. Of course I'm reading this! I'm certainly not any kind of expert, but I do know that some batting is better for hand vs machine quilting, and thread mmakes a huge difference too. And yes, I've learned this the hard way. I think it looks nice!

  2. Quilting is not my forte and I don't think I could ever do as good a job as you, the colours are lovely, (the pictures of the fabric are a lot brighter in your previous post).
It's a lovely quilt and very cosy looking.

  3. My son emailed me to suggest making quilts to order, they have no idea of the amount of work that goes into one. Yours looks super.

  4. A gorgeous quilt and a lot of hard work too. Quilts for dolls are the way to go, I don't have the patience for a big quilt!

  5. It looks like a gorgeous quilt. I wish I could make something like this but I just don't have the skills or the patience. x

  6. Oh, it's beautiful. They say that a quilt should never be quite perfect and those perfect quilters from days gone by used to put in a deliberate mistake. I think that any quilt shows a huge amount of love and effort - and you've certainly worked hard to make this one. I think it's absolutely stunning.

  7. Looks lovely but clearly not as easy as it looks!

  8. I enjoy hand quilting on occasion, there is something very therapeutic about stabbing the fabric through the frame. I like the lighter green sashing, I think dark green would have been too obvious and would have drained the colours. I really like it :)

  9. Im also working on a quilt and know just how hard it is to make them perfect. I seem to end up with sqaures that don't meet up despite them all being the same size when I started out!! Good luck with it - definitely go off and do other projects, you want to love it and not despise having to finish it xx

  10. I have no experience of quilting at all! You have my deepest respect for even attempoting it in the first place (it;s a scary thing for me!) and I think it looks lovely so far!

  11. That looks beautiful. It doesn't matter if the squares don't exactly match up, l think that adds to the handmade appeal.

  12. Love the colours you have used. Ive just finished my first quilt top and yet to attempt to actually quilt it (thats the bit Im most scared of!) Anyway, it looks great. Really like the design you have used. Very effective. x

  13. Your quilt is beautiful and of course it needs some small differences - - that's what makes it 'you'. Hope you have a good week.
